| The Grissell Hay Kitchen kept up with many 18th-century appetites on cold winter days. The Widow Hay, like other widows of her time, helped paying bills by opening up her house to guests after her husband died. Colonial Williamsburg is the historic district of the independent city of Williamsburg, Virginia. It consists of many of the buildings that, from 1699 to 1780, formed colonial Virginia's capital. For most of the 18th century, Williamsburg was the center of government, education and culture in the Colony of Virginia. It was here that Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, James Monroe, and dozens more helped mold democracy in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States. Daily life is re-created within the Historic Area of 173 acres in wich there are 88 original 18 century buildings and many more rebuilt on original foundations. |
