| Madame Laurens, Marie Octavie Bernier, was the wife of the commander of Renoir's regiment during the Franco-Prussian War. In 1871, Renoir painted portraits of husband and wife in the town of Tarbes, in south-west France, where the couple were living with Madame Bernier's father. |
